 One of the 7 New Wonders of the World. The town of Chichen-Itza was established during the Classic period close to two natural cavities (cenotes or chenes), which gave the town its name "At the edge of the well of the Itzaes". The cenotes facilitated tapping the underground waters of the area

 Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya coastal area, Playa del Carmen is almost exactly in the middle between the cities of Cancun and Tulum, just about 35 miles from each. Playa del Carmen is also the jumping off point for Cozumel island, with ferries departing every hour.

 Cenotes are natural sinkholes or pits that form when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing groundwater. There are over 7,000 cenotes in the Riviera Maya, Cancun, and the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula. However, the true number is thought to be much higher
